Roadmap
An Independent Home
OpenPets was created as a local-first, lightweight sandbox for interactive widgets and desktop companions. To help it remain free, open, and secure over time, we are laying the groundwork for a dedicated stewardship entity. The ultimate goal is to establish a shared stewardship model that acts as a custodian for the core ecosystem, keeping it independent and open-source.
Why Durable Stewardship Matters
An open platform should not depend on the whims of a single commercial backer or the personal time constraints of a sole developer. Software that runs locally on modern desktops and interacts with coding workspaces requires long-term trust, steady updates, and active security maintenance.
The OpenPets Foundation is the direction we are building to support this future. The ultimate goal is to establish a shared stewardship model that can act as a custodian for the project's core repositories, intellectual property, and distribution infrastructure - helping the ecosystem remain independent and open-source. Developing these formal commitments and structures is the governance work currently ahead.
A future Foundation could focus on supporting three key areas:
Open Core & SDK
Supporting efforts to keep the main Electron app, local runtime, and the Plugin SDK under open licenses.
Plugin Neutrality
Helping keep the shared catalog neutral, with clear and open submission rules for all creators.
Reliable Security
Aspirations to coordinate regular sandbox checks, code signing updates, and local-first data protection.
Three Ways to Participate
This ecosystem thrives because of builders, artists, and teams. Choose the track where you want to contribute.
Build the Platform
Contribute code, fix bugs, or build new integrations for the desktop app, command-line interface, and MCP server backend. The codebase is public and open to collaboration.
Create Companions
Draw animated desktop pets, design custom reaction profiles, or write sandboxed JavaScript plugins. Creators can submit their pet packs or plugins for review for the global catalog.
Support Stewardship
